Parent Coaching From Caroline Maguire
“My child doesn’t get invited to parties!”
We all know this child… the one who is often alone, sometimes awkward, sometimes super cool, sweet and yet can’t keep friends. Is this your child? The child of a sibling, dear friend or neighbor?
Our hearts break for this child – and her/his parents. Life is tough enough, but without friends or a network, it can be downright cruel.
Although it’s difficult for parents to face the realization that their child is not making friends, I want to reassure you that with tailored parent coaching, there are many ways you can help. Social skills, much like any other skill, can be learned – at any age.
How can you help? My book Why Will No One Play with Me? addresses this painful challenge that can affect any child (actually anyone), anywhere. Social isolation is universal, it is a Human Problem. Social isolation can lead to other, devastating consequences too including a decreased ability to deal with stressful situations. This is where parent coaching comes in.
We don’t arrive in the world knowing how to make friends, but we arrive wanting to make friends.
Getting to a Better Place
As a parent coach, you will better recognize the extent of the situation, how it impacts her experience and how to work together collaboratively to develop the skills needed to foster change and growth.
You’ll learn in the parent coaching process that calming conversations – the foundation for transformation – will be the beginning of thoughtful reflection, goal-setting and skill-building.
